課程概述

Ocean-atmosphere interaction plays a dominant role in the Earth System Model (ESM) and ocean climate. This course will review the background and physics of ocean modeling, ocean turbulence and parameterization, ocean sea-level and air-sea interaction over fronts/eddies from the aspects of regional and global models. The most state-of-the art research of ocean-atmosphere interaction and recent progress of ocean climate research, including modelling sea level variation and ocean decadal variability, will be further addressed.

Numerical discretization
Dynamical cores of ocean models
Multi-scale physical processes of ocean models

II. Ocean Turbulence and Parameterization in the Climate Model
Sub-grid scale effects in ocean models
Vertical mixing parameterization
Horizontal mixing parameterization
Bottom boundary layer and topographic effects
Dynamical effects of mesoscale eddies

III. Air-Sea interaction over ocean fronts and eddies and large-scale interaction
Relevant mechanisms
Tropical variability and relevant ocean-atmosphere interaction
Mid-latitude ocean-atmosphere interaction
Large-scale ocean-atmosphere interaction in Pacific

Introduction of Physical Oceanography, Earth System Model (recommended but not required), Environmental Fluid Mechanics (recommended but not required), or consent of the Instructors.
